Doctors have long recognized that alcohol addiction is a disease and should be treated strictly under the supervision of doctors in specialized institutions. Alcohol has a detrimental effect on the human body, which ultimately contributes to the emergence of serious health problems. One of the dangers of inveterate drinkers is early heart attack and stroke.
People who regularly drink more than three drinks a day are 14 years earlier at risk of dying from a stroke than non-drinkers. Alcohol dependence is linked to stroke caused by bleeding in the brain.
Charlotte Cordonnier, a medical doctor at the University of Lille, examined the records of more than half a thousand stroke patients, with an average age of 71. The records included information on alcohol consumption.
The experiment showed that a quarter of respondents who abused alcohol were much more likely to have a stroke. For a complete picture, respondents underwent brain tomography. The results of the study showed that those who drank 50 grams of alcohol daily had a stroke at age 60. Non-drinkers had it 10 years later.
According to research by Korean doctors, people who regularly drink alcoholic beverages have a high risk of death from a heart attack. Scientists have found that men with high blood pressure who drank 6 servings of alcohol daily had a 4-fold higher death rate from a heart attack than teetotalers. Accordingly, regular consumption of 12 servings of alcohol per day increased the risk of death from a heart attack by up to 12 times.
In men with hypertension who regularly consumed more than 6 servings of alcoholic beverages at a time, the risk of a fatal outcome from a heart attack was 2 times higher than in patients with normal blood pressure. The study involved more than 6 thousand respondents aged 55 years, observations lasted for 20 years. The lowest percentage of heart attacks, as expected, was in non-drinkers and people who do not suffer from hypertension, only 0.2% per year. For comparison, in men who regularly drink alcohol and suffer from hypertension of the 3rd degree, this figure was 27%.
These studies are figures worth pondering, because a simple way to avoid the risk of early heart attack and stroke is to give up regular alcohol consumption.
