What to do if a drug addict does not want to be treatedIt should be started with the fact that the overwhelming majority of appeals to a drug treatment center are not the initiative of drug addicts (or alcoholics) themselves, but of their relatives and friends. And all these people are forced to state that their loved one does not consider himself to be in danger, and sees no reason to begin drug addiction treatment and further rehabilitation. <\/p>\n\n

What are the reasons for this behavior?<\/h2>\n\n

First of all, this is connected with the peculiarity of the disease itself, in particular with the obligatory denial of addiction. Denial is the psychological defense of the patient, necessary for further use of narcotic substances. The patient’s psyche builds with the help of denial a kind of fence of its own feelings, which is expressed in the non-recognition of the harm caused to itself and others. <\/p>\n\n

Another reason that influences the fact that a drug addict has an extremely negative attitude towards the idea of undergoing drug addiction treatment anonymously is the actions of family members or other close people who in one way or another encourage the use of drugs. These people pay off the patient’s debts, close loans, buy out pawned items from a pawnshop, take them from the police, help with money. <\/p>\n\n

However, one of the main reasons why a drug addict does not want to undergo treatment is the fear of the relatives and friends of their drug addict relative, who now looks more like a bandit, a madman, someone alien. Such people become aggressive and, accordingly, cause fear even in their own parents, who feel defenseless. <\/p>\n\n

How to change the situation?<\/h3>\n\n

There are three possible scenarios.<\/p>\n\n

Relatives of the patient need to contact a reliable drug addiction center, where a qualified specialist will work with them. The actions of a professional drug addiction specialist will be aimed at changing the reactive behavior of loved ones, which occurs through awareness and mastering practical tools for interaction within the family. This event can be a good helper for families in which drug addiction of one of the relatives has not yet gone too far. <\/p>\n\n

Family members act according to the recommendations of a specialist in the field of narcology – they perform strictly specified actions that motivate the patient to begin drug treatment, which he does in the near future. During the rehabilitation of a drug addict, work with relatives also takes place. This is a more radical option. It is used for families that no longer have the strength to withstand the destructive behavior of a loved one, but are still ready to act. <\/p>\n\n

In this case, specialists of the drug rehabilitation center act as intermediaries in the process of persuading the patient to begin treatment. Direct communication activities are established directly by the employees of the drug rehabilitation center. Parents or other close people thus receive the protection and moral support they need in the person of highly qualified psychologists and drug addiction specialists. <\/p>\n\n
